This wasn’t exactly a disappointment, but it was just kind of so-so. I omitted the capers and the olives, so it wasn’t very tapenade-y, I suppose. I did finally track down the anchovy paste, and while it looked like something you’d find in a cat’s litter box, it wasn’t bad. I’m not averse to canned tuna (I was raised in the Midwest, after all, and tuna casserole was on the regular rotation), and I actually prefer it, at least in theory, to Ramen noodles for a really cheap meal because it’s so much more nutritious. I can see how people think it looks and smells like cat food, but I really don’t mind it. I just prefer something more like a chicken salad with grapes, celery, and walnuts, or with hard boiled eggs and dill (can you believe it? no dill!). This recipe (from How Easy is That?) is billed as an appetizer, but I really can’t imagine serving it to guests. I spread it on toast with thinly sliced cucumbers for a quick lunch. This is the first “meh” recipe I’ve tried in a while, so I suppose I was due for one.
